A commenter recently asked why I live in California, if the cost of living is so high. I don't really have a firm answer to this question, but here's one reason:
This is the view from Highway 1 just 20 minutes north of where I live. I love the hectic, noisy, untrammeled coastline up here, and I love the way the ocean crashes against forested mountains. You should see it in person, you really should.

I don't know where you're based, but I saw virtually the same image driving on a twisting road in a preserve north of San Francisco. All I could see were trees and rocks when the road suddenly curved west and opened up a 180 degree view of sun shining on gray steel water.
It is still one of the prettiest things I've seen, so mesmerizing I forgot to watch the road and almost didn't make the next curve. oops.

OK.
Crazy thought.
I actually felt more calm just looking at that picture. THANKS.
My snow-ridden cold body needed that.
Aahh..

Beautiful! It reminds me of home. Your blog is fantastic! I'm one of those going-into-rural-primary-care med students, and this is all great stuff to be reading. Count me a fan!

That's what I loved about NoCal--the rocky beaches. Ebb and flow of ocean/seawater across sand is boring. Seeing the water crash against an actual OBJECT, the water fingering its way through channels in the rock, each unique, (often while sitting on them!) is why I never live far from the water.
