The Hospitalist Lexicon, Lesson #1

Upon being informed she will walk into a twenty-patient service the next day, all of the following are acceptable emotional responses for a rural hospitalist:

  • Horror
  • Despair
  • Nihilism
  • Hysteria
  • Resignation
  • Numb, emotional shock
  • Dread
  • Fury
  • Desperation
  • False hope
  • Escapism
  • Panic
  • Pure Type-A intellectualism
  • False bravado
  • Grim determination

Feel free to add your suggestions in the comments. I'm going to be stuck in the hospital for a while.

Don't forget denial. Last time it wasn't that bad.

Hee hee, Theresa, that's an awesome list! I can't think of any additions, but I'm sure I could look them up in the thesaurus! But alas, I am way to lazy for even that. Have a fun time at work! Make new friends! Don't talk to strangers! Play nice! :) and all that other good stuff!

I guess "acceptance" belongs at the bottom? :)

Suicidality?

Why Fury?

Personally, I find the nearest cookie and coffee to dive in to, in order to provide some solace on days like that. Not healthy, but sometimes it's all I can think of.
